List of document management software

There are numerous document management system software packages on the market.  We have compiled the following list for our own purposes, and we will keep it up to date as DMS software comes to our attention.  Inclusion or non-inclusion on this list should not be taken as any indication of the quality of a DMS.

Before you start looking at DMS software, it is essential to decide what you actually need from it, as you would with any other major software purchase.  This in turn will depend on:

  • what type of documentation you already have
  • what your current platform is
  • what your users are used to already
  • your current IT strategy
  • your security requirements 
  • your traceability requirements
  • your quality system compliance needs
  • what document authoring packages you use/plan to use

Our approach is to undertake a study for each client which looks at the above requirements, and others, and prepare a report which gives our recommendations on the functionality you actually need.  You can then feed this in to your normal software trade study/purchasing process to choose the most appropriate package.

In order to do this, we:

  • assay all of your existing documentation
  • talk to key staff about current and future activities and policies
  • assess your quality system and other compliance needs
  • prepare a detailed written report
