A procedure writer is a professional who:

  • understands the different information types to produce  well structured policies and procedures aimed at an audience and task focus
  • can interview and facilitate information from process owners, subject matter experts and other information sources
  • may have additional skills in the areas of flow charting, authoring tools and process mapping 
  • edits and formats documents
  • understands version control and publishing requirements

How much will it cost?

Wage and hourly rates for procedure writers vary according to experience and capability.  Specialists (eg procedure writers who are experts in a field such as ITIL, quality management and OH&S) are often more expensive per hour than non-specialists.

Typical rates for our technical procedure writers are between $55 and $95 per hour.  Generally, procedure writers at lower rates are less experienced, and often less productive, so that the cost for your project may not be reduced by looking for a low rate - it might actually cost you more in total!

Our clients normally need one or more procedure writers for periods between one and twelve months.  A longer contract period usually means a lower hourly rate.  The rate that we give you for a particular writer will be inclusive of all taxes, superannuation, insurance, except GST.

Salaries for procedure writers range between $60K and $80K, plus super.  Experienced writers who can control and mentor a team of procedure writers will range between $80K and $100K.  To find a permanent procedure writer that matches a client's requirements, we charge the client a percentage of the writer's first year's salary.
